The issue of identity is addressed in many ways in the Buddhadharma. The Mahayana begins with the notion that self is ultimately empty. Relatively speaking, however, things seem more complicated. Practitioners gather that it is something to be gotten rid of – nevertheless, some presentation of identity is necessary in everyday life.
We will examine both the absolute and the relative nature of our human identity using traditional study, contemplation and meditation techniques. We will intellectually explore the existence of self with Madhyamaka logic. We will reach for the experiential existence of self, using Mahamudra investigation and contemplation techniques. We will consider our individual karma, circumstances and possibilities, clarifying our natural wisdom style within the Five Buddha Families.
Realizing the open possibility intrinsic in the truth of sunyata, we may resolve ways to manifest ever more skillfully in the world.
Elizabeth Olmsted
Born in Scotland 1948. In search of dharma, went overland to India 1970 -71. Practiced Yoga and Vedanta with Sivananda Swami Jyotir Maya Nanda, including 6 months as a nun.
From 1973 studied and practiced with Chogyam Trungpa Rinpoche for 10 years. Started Miami center. In Boulder, taught Hinayana and Mahayana classes, completed Ngondro practice, and 2 year Nge-Don Program at Naropa Institute.
In 1983, with Trungpa Rinpoche’s blessings, moved to Nepal to study with Tulku Urgyen Rinpoche. Lived mostly in Asia since then, continuing Buddhist studies with TUR’s illustrious dharma heirs.
